I have been buying ASICS trainers for over five years, always selecting the latest design for overpronation. These looked to be the next suitable choice.

There are some real changes in fit with these compared to previous ASICS.

1) They come up really small. I’m a uk 6.5 and in ASICS have to buy 7. I did the same with the Gel Kayano 28 but they were snug fitting all around. Not broad enough really but certainly ok in terms of length.

2) The section that wraps around the heel is really low compared to older models. Despite using the heel lock for lacing, I felt constantly like they were slipping off my heel. They offer no stability in the ankle either.

3) They seem over-engineered. After a steady walk of 10,000 steps the insides of my heels were sore and blistered. I appreciate there are some minor corrections at play for the overpronation but I walk more than 10,000 steps in my old GT-1000s daily and never have this issue, they’re also designed for overpronation so I was expecting like for like.

4) The new design with the more solid front piece is nice, less chance of me putting my toe through the mesh at some point.

5) They are hot. All the time I feel like my feet are on fire in these. I can’t explain why.

6) I have a broad foot so I lace my trainers to allow for that. With these, if I allowed an extra centimetre in lacing, I could see my socks either side of the tongue. Never ever had that with ASICS before.

I’m returning them after preserving for a couple of weeks. Despite trying to stick with them I just can’t stand the pain. I’m back in my holey GT-1000s until the new ones arrive. I don’t think sizing up would have helped either.

Kayano always brilliant

Great, supportive trainers. I always buy ASICS for running and whilst the GT series is fine if you’re an overpronator, you really notice the difference in comfort and stability with the kayano. Unfortunately the sizing in the 28’s is noticeably smaller than with previous editions so going up half a size may be worthwhile. I’m finding my normal size makes my toes numb after a little while.

Lower heel back than earlier models

The heel back on version 28 sits way lower than the predecessors (models 22, 23, 25 and 26). I've been getting a black pair of women's Asics Gel-Kayano running shoes every year since 2015 (this is my 6th pair). So obviously I think they are great otherwise!

Disclaimer: this heel issue COULD be because I was sent a EUR size 39 1/2 instead of the usual EUR 40 that I normally get when ordering UK 6.5 from Asics. However, I've been going back and forth between those sizes over the years and this is the first time it's been a problem. I normally need extra insoles for supporting my extreme overpronation, and the shoes barely hug my heels at all then.

My Mum purchased these as her knee have no cartridge hardly so walking is an issue. She said they support her knee and allow her to walk flatter on her feet reducing the pain in her front shins and knees. She can walk further now than she used too.
