He's got no style or flash, but Swedish detective Martin Beck is superb at one thing: methodically catching criminals and putting them away. He's joined in these episodes by Steinar Hovland (Kristofer Hivju Game of Thrones), an accomplished investigator from Oslo, Norway, whose relaxed manner belies his killer drive in the interrogation room. Beck learns to work with his new colleague but also finds out that Steiner brings with him the baggage of a complicated home life. The two men have a lot in common, however. They both possess an astuteness about human nature, unerring instincts and the competence that comes from decades of solving crimes. Off the job, Martin may be a loner but he's not anti-social; he regularly sees his daughter, with whom he has a better relationship now than when he was neglecting her as a child. And at the end of a workday, there s always an interesting conversation and a nightcap with a neighbor who gives new meaning to the word quirky.

This is a solid police series, the equal of Wallander, in my opinion. The 38 episodes that comprise this series to date were filmed over a span of 20 years. Given the longevity of the series, it is not surprising that only two characters have appeared in all 38 episodes: the central character, Martin Beck (played by Peter Haber), and his neighbor and balcony buddy Grannen (Ingvar Hirdwall). The loss of Beck’s right-hand man Gunvald (Mikael Persbrandt) after 31 episodes has been justifiably lamented by some reviewers, but I’ve been impressed by Steinar (Kristofer Hovland), the character who replaced him. Also lamented has been the reduced role of Beck, who, after retiring from the police, returns as a consultant and then in a senior advisory role. It is a transition that I found a reasonable arc given the 20 year-run of the series, during which the viewer has watched as Beck aged, moved toward retirement age, and then passed the baton to a group of actors who appear, from these episodes, capable of sustaining the series.
