Having always enjoyed Beck's music I had no illusions about his latest album. It hasn't disappointed. There are very few tracks on the album that I didn't like on first listen, which compared to other musicians, whom I admire just as highly, is quite an achievement. I liked all of them, by the way, on second listen. I categorise Beck as "grown up pop" in much the same way as bands like The Blue Nile, The Style Council or Prefab Sprout were pigeon-holed. He produces a sound that stands out and is out-standing. It put a smile on my face and as with all albums that pass my whistle test I've found myself singing the tunes in my head repeatedly since the LP arrived last week. Before I heard each each track I was anticipating skipping forward and amazingly that never happened. Even the final track, "Fix Me", which is the slowest on the album, was perfectly positioned to make me feel refreshed and rather chilled. If you like great tunes with great hooks and a great pop beat you'll probably like this album. If you love Beck it's a no brainer.
I own the Deluxe 45RPM 2LP Vinyl Edition & WAV download. The latter is particularly dynamic compared to MP3.
