Oh dear. This must have sounded like a great idea but I found it to be pretty useless for a tourist, even after multiple visits to NYC. It isn't a guide book but a collection of recommendations for bars, restaurants, shopping & activities made by locals, many of whom, I would conjecture, live in Brooklyn & the East Village judging by the number of entries for those areas. Having said that, only three locals are named in the book although whether the suggestions are theirs alone or incorporate the ideas of other I don't know. I'd guess that few of the locals live in midtown Manhattan, one or two might live in Harlem, and none on the upper east or west sides, nor in the Bronx. Subsequent investigation of the three named locals suggest this observation is correct and they are of a certain demographic in terms of age!
Is a tourist really going to trek out to Jackson Heights in Queens in order to visit a food truck? Or to some of the further reaches of Brooklyn? One of the locals recommended the Union Square Cafe - fine, but this is hardly an unknown place! The Green Spaces section includes such unknown places as Central Park, Washington Square Park & the High Line! There are some interesting museums mentioned but nothing that you wouldn't find in an ordinary guidebook which would incidentally be rather more helpful in finding places. Whilst the suggestions might be (only) slightly offbeat, a recommendation by a local is meaningless if the place doesn't interest you in the first place.
The other issue, is that these recommendations are subject to the whims of time & fashion - places come & go, become more or less trendy. The same could be said of conventional guide books but will afflict this sort of guide much more readily.
My overall impression is that this book would be of more use to someone newly-residing in NYC, particularly in the environs of Williamsburg or the East Village! Even then the book is seriously hampered in its usefulness by the absence of an index. You can plan a day in a particular location - there are sections at the front of the book with maps and listings for e.g. restaurants, museums, etc. The maps aren't brilliant and there is no practical information about getting around - you are advised to download the What3Words and MTA apps.

Great chunky Big Apple guide book!
Granskad i Storbritannien den 31 januari 2022
Off to the Big Apple? Need a guide book?
This is the DK Eyewitness New York City Live Like A Local By The People Who Call It Home Travel Guide, Hardback, 192 Pages and Measuring 13.49 x 1.91 x 18.57.
This guide book is a good size, it will fit in any bag but it is a chunky monkey! This guide book has everything a brief welcome guide breaking down the city into areas, a brief note on the do's and don'ts, Eat, Drink, Shop, Arts & Culture, Nightlife and Outdoors.
Each section has a map with each place marked, then there is a detailed description with address, website and a brief synopsis of each place. Shame it doesn't go deeper with price range and hints.
I have been to NY back in 2003, before mobiles were so handy, just armed with a map and a guide book similar to this. Admittedly you can find this information online, but this book has it all in one place. My only grumbles are the lack of photos. I like a good pic, and no quick index / appendix.
Overall this is a good guide book, it isn't perfect but will give you a useful insight into the Big Apple before you go. Recommended.

Not Hugely Useful As a Tourist
Granskad i Storbritannien den 30 januari 2022
I've been to New York a few times, here's my take:
Literally 'like a local' guide, which can best be described as a guide 'for locals' - to help them find little nooks and crannies in their city, much like you would with hearsay. No images, pictures, index, or even a well laid out useful map that a tourist would be able to use as the exclusively single travel book to take to a city they have never visited before.
If you have a collection of travel book you plan to take to NYC and want a quick little local-type reference guide with no index, and a map which lacks detail, then this is for you. But then why would you want to buy something which is better laid out in a good travel guide anyway?
In it's defence, they have thrown in some very well known parks and museums in for good measure. Just in case you weren't aware of sites like Central Park...or the MET Museum.

Ok to use alongside other tourist guides
Granskad i Storbritannien den 17 april 2022
New York guide through the eyes of three residents sets the scene for a book of insider (and little known) gems that you won’t get in standard tour guides, and in that sense, it does seem to underdeliver somewhat as it doesn’t seem to cover enough geographically of the city and is crammed full of what appears to be more of a business directory.
You won’t get much help getting around either, the maps are ok to pinpoint certain places and businesses, but you’ll struggle to get them for getting around the city.
This book would be a good addition to use alongside a standard tourist guide for New York, and the listed places and businesses are a very good reference, certainly aid in helping you to plan your trip in certain areas of the city, but as a stand-alone guide, it isn’t comprehensive enough.

Nice book of hidden gems
Granskad i Storbritannien den 16 februari 2022
This is a lovely little book of recommendations by local New Yorkers, so it contains a lot of places that you would miss if you were to rely solely on normal guidebooks. It splits the city into smaller areas and contains maps with all the recommended places marked on them, so you could wander around a neighbourhood and then look a the book to see where to eat or you could plan your day beforehand. A handy little book for extra tips for places that you would otherwise miss, I hope I can visit New York soon to make good use of it!
