Charlotte Joko Beck was my introduction to Zen Buddhism many years ago - and in fact she only wrote two books prior to this particular book which is a collection of her training papers and random thoughts. It is edited by her daughter, after Joko Beck's death. The teachings are fresh, simple and mind rocking. A joyful and very demanding read both at the same time.
I'm recommending it to all my friends - both Buddhist and not.

Fresh and never-before published talks on the crux of Buddhist practice and how to uncover wonder in your daily life from legendary Zen teacher and bestselling author Charlotte Joko Beck.
"As you embrace the suffering of life, the wonder shows up at the same time. They go together."--Charlotte Joko Beck
In this collection of never-before published teachings by Charlotte Joko Beck, one of the most influential Western-born Zen teachers, she explores our “core beliefs”—the hidden, negative convictions we hold about ourselves that direct our thoughts and behavior and prevent us from experiencing life as it is. Wryly humorous and relatable, Beck uses powerfully clear language to show how our lives present us with daily opportunities to move from thinking to experiencing, from compulsivity to confidence, and from anguish to peace. Whether you are a Zen practitioner or a reader interested in exploring these teachings for the first time, Ordinary Wonder offers the depth and breadth of Beck’s remarkable experience in an accessible guide to practice amidst the struggles of daily life.

Recension
“For heaven’s sake, practice what Joko Beck recommends, what she spent forty years doing and teaching: sitting silent and still, for long periods of time, experiencing everything that is happening in what you call your body, your thoughts, and your emotions. If you persist, you will find, as Joko did, an ease and a simple happiness in all that life presents you.”—from the foreword by Jan Chozen Bays, author of Mindful Eating
“Beck’s work was foundational in developing communities of Zen practice in the United States, and her work in the early years of the movement solidified the place of women in American Zen tradition. This collection carries the full weight of her significance, but also echoes the lightness of her teaching and way of being.” —Foreword Reviews

Om författaren
CHARLOTTE JOKO BECK, one of the most influential Western-born Zen teachers, was born in 1917 and died June 15, 2011. She began her practice of Zen with Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi Roshi, from whom she received Dharma transmission. She was the founder of the Zen Center of San Diego and the Ordinary Mind Zen School. Through her teachings, and her work as the author of two modern Zen classics--Everyday Zen: Love and Work and Nothing Special: Living Zen--Joko Beck became a visible and widely admired force among the first generation of America's convert Buddhists. Her influence continues through her teachings and through those for whom she was a direct teacher.

She was my teacher though I never met her
Recenserad i USA 🇺🇸 den 26 juni 2021
I first got to know Joko Beck through her earlier books, one of which was written thirty years ago. She has been one of the most influential teachers of my life. I don't remember the names of my elementary, high school, or master's program teachers, but I remember Joko.
I related to her on more levels than I can articulate, and still do in this newest compilation of her teachings. Most importantly, she taught in a way that made sense to me, in a way that I could apply in my own life. She changed my thinking and thus helped me to shape a life that has been richer and richer with every passing year.

Teachings not to be missed!
Recenserad i USA 🇺🇸 den 25 september 2021
Wonderful book. No warm and fuzzy, no sugarcoating. Honest insights into true zen practice. Made me laugh, cry, squirm and recognize some of my misguided ideas. If you’re interested in real practice, read this book.

A let down compared to "Nothing Special"
Recenserad i USA 🇺🇸 den 27 april 2022
The stories tend to ramble and it just doesn't have the insight of her previous books. " Nothing Special" is a 5 star book and "Everyday Zen" is a 4.75 star book. Skip this book.
