2,0 av 5 stjärnor Valuable, but questionable framing of facts, feels like "pop science".

I really loved this book and it's having a big impact on my life. Very useful.

That said, his writing style can be questionable. I expected a book where everything is well cited and described. Rock solid facts and info on sleep from this PhD. Instead, there are lots of claims made (with flowery and strong language), but the citation is relatively infrequent, and sometimes I wanted one to go check the source.

Sometimes, info presented seems to conflict with what came before. He says that Light NREM sleep (stage 2) is primarily responsible for "sleep spindles" and memory transfer from short term to long term, and then later he drops a generic statement about how stages 3 and 4 are primarily responsible for this activity. He says "For these reasons, melatonin is not a powerful sleeping aid in and of itself..." after describing how melatonin kicks off the processes of your body's sleep, but doesn't drive the sleep itself; then, later in the book, he describes how viewing screens late at night (which most of us do) delays the release of melatonin and your body isn't ready for sleep when you finally go to bed. The logical conclusion of this is the melatonin would be a powerful sleep aid for those who continue to use screens at night. I found myself constantly feeling slight contradictions and undersupported statements in this book and it reduced the credibility of the entire book by just a bit, hence the four stars.

That said, read it. Most people know almost nothing about sleep and this changed by understanding of it and provided many valuable and enjoyable facts. I'm going to try biphasic sleep as I'm lucky enough to control my work schedule... plan is to sleep 10-5am and have a 90min Siesta in the afternoon to help solidify mornings learnings and clear the brain for more that afternoon.

UPDATE:
I went through and reviewed key passages, a habit of mine a couple months after finishing a book, and feel even more strongly about the many claims unsabstantiated by research or evidence. Another example is the alarm clock section. He describes a reasonable story, how we are "shocking our nervous system repeatedly", and makes it sound like an incredibly damaging thing with his intense language, and leaves it at that. Is it damaging? Has anyone looked into this? Has Dr. Walker? It just makes it hard to believe a lot of this book.

Another example:
"A study across four US companies... showed a net capital loss of $54M. Ask any board of directors whether they would like to correct a single problem fleecing their company of $50M and the response will be rapid and unanimous." It's $50M across four companies, not one, but he then frames the punch line with it being about one company, which is basically using a 4X exaggertion of his supporting data to make his conclusion more punchy. You might say that is minor, but it is how he writes this entire book, which adds up to dubious claims and, for me, overall distrust of his statements. This is really too bad, because I believe much of the points he makes are valid, but I wish I could trust his statements more.

2,0 av 5 stjärnor More for the lay person than those with some background in psychology/sleep

I have never felt compelled to write a book review but after reading a few specific lines, here I am.

First, I studied neuroscience as an undergrad and have had prior exposure to sleep research. I am only about halfway through the book, but so far I have found the book a little boring and basic. For example, Dr. Walker will present a graph that I can very easily interpret and get his point. However, he will spend 4-5 paragraphs explaining the nuances of the graph which seemed unnecessary to me.

I am also not a fan of this writing style, it is a bit dramatic, bordering on corney at times.

But the real reason I am here is due to a footnote in Part II. In discussing brain stimulation to induce sleep, Dr. Walker notes that this brain stimulation is nothing like Electro Convulsion Therapy (ECT) which is used to treat treatment resistant depression and other psychiatric disorder. Dr. Walker notes that the voltage in ECT is many times worse than for sleep induction and refers the reader to watch the ECT scene in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Dr. Walker, in a time where psychiatric illnesses are on the rise and mental health treatment remains stigmatized, this reference is not only irresponsible, but also actively harmful to your readers. ECT in modern psychiatry is nothing like what is portrayed in that movie, which is now over 40 years old! One only needs to google, "modern ECT" to see the difference! By putting this misconception in your reader's heads, you may turn off your readers to a potentially life saving treatment. Given the relationship between sleep and psychiatric illness, your book likely attracts more psychiatric patients than similar nonfiction on other topics. You, yourself, mention this relationship many, many times in this book.

Dr. Walker, I hope this review somehow makes it to you and that you consider removing this reference in future versions of the book. As a PhD, you should be ashamed, spitting on a treatment where your only knowledge of it apparently comes from a movie.

After hearing the author on the Joe Rogan podcast I excitedly bought the book...and then regretted it. The author went on a nauseating rant by telling us that sleep is important in 312 different ways...and yet didn't really offer any solid advice to help us get more sleep. In other words he stated the obvious, but didn't offer anything concrete or practical. I have no doubt he is an amazing sleep expert, but we all know that sleep is good for you. The challenge is figuring out how to get more of it or better quality.

I'll save you the money by summarizing the book:
"Sleep is really, really, really, really, really important. If you don't get enough sleep, you could have many problems because sleep is really, really, really important. I'm not going to tell you how to get better or more sleep, I will only tell you that sleep is really important."

Personally, I think he's holding out on this information for his next book. Grrrrrrrr.

2,0 av 5 stjärnor Important subject but poorly written
Recenserad i Storbritannien den 17 februari 2019
Verifierat köp
I didn’t enjoy reading this book although I think the subject is immensely important. I forced myself to read through till the end because it’s a timely subject and not many people are talking about it. However the book is tedious, repetitive and very poorly edited. It is not pleasant to read, at times depressing, too technical and the editorial staff are obviously on leave. The book contains at the very end a one-page list of tips to improve your sleep, thrown in as an afterthought, whilst it should deserve a full fledged chapter and it was clearly the most useful and practical part of the book.

This guy might be a professor but bless him, he can’t write for love or money. He has a tin ear and it’s very excruciating to read. He’s onto something however. I think that the fitness and nutrition industry will (or should) wise up to the need of adequate sleep. In that sense this book is a piece of sensible advice and warning.

2,0 av 5 stjärnor Nothing much about how to sleep better
Recenserad i Indien 🇮🇳 den 2 juni 2021

I recently picked up this book called Why We Sleep by Matt Walker and I was excited in the beginning to get some tips about how I can sleep better but I was led to dismay by the author as I could not find a single useful technique in the book about how to sleep better or how to fall asleep more easily.

The only solution I found is through trial and error and that is that I wear myself out during the day so that I can get a full night of rest when I sleep in the night.

Disappointed with this book despite it’s great reviews.

I was disappointed to see that the ink was faded and even leaked to other pages. It’s hard to read some pages with the words being so light and part of them faded. Also, the paper quality isn’t the best.
