Amazingly Sexist - I could not go on

I really wanted to like these books. I read 3 or 4 of them, but I just couldn't stand how sexist these books are. Most times a female character is described, it is by how "she is not wearing anything under her dress" or about how "erect her nipples are" or about how "they are so sexually distracting to the main character" - even if the main character has a girlfriend he claims to love. And almost every character falls into these parameters. The only women that aren't describe sexually or aren't raving sexual lunatics or want to be submissive playthings are 1) the non-feminine police chief and 2) the wife of a Paladin. This book series basically communicates that to be female is to either be non-feminine, religiously chaste, or to be a raving sex-craved creature who's only talent is to distract other characters by your looks. Not a very positive image of women or men. I don't think most real men behave this way in these novels either. This theme is deeply entrenched in the novels, so I could not keep going. I do not recommend these novels for anyone who would like a fair and equal view on what it means to be female. These are great if you like shallow portrayals of femininity and demeaning views for how others perceive women. I recommend checking out Benedict Jacka - book 1 is the worst but gets amazing after that, and better yet, the female characters are described by their abilities - not by how sexual they can be.

The writing style is painfully silly, corny and cheesy. The author clearly has never met a woman, and probably hasn't met too many real live people period. In fact, I doubt he's ever left his parent's basement, where he no doubt has his own magic lair. Every character is a pathetic cookie cutout of a stereotype that was beat to death two decades ago. Although it's a very short, easy read, I still had to give up and put it down while reading on the train this morning because the prose was so cringe-worthy that I was actually embarrassed that someone might see me reading this crap. This book is fine for 15 year olds, but I can't see how any adult can read this stuff. It's really scary to see all the positive reviews and attacks on the negative reviews. These are probably all the same people who are responsible for the popularity of all the terrible programming on TV. If this is a good example of what's fun and humorous then we'll all doomed. Any adult who likes this has a lot of maturing to do. I would suggest getting a job (working from home doesn't count), moving out of your parent's house, and getting some hobbies that require you to interact with people in the real world.

Sorry to seem so bitter, but I'm getting really sick and tired of buying books based on the positive reviews of others only to find out they're garbage like this.

Not bad but veeery sexist stereotype ‘sexy women’ tropes, and frankly-I can’t stand Murphy-the ‘tough girl with a soft heart’ (and obviously tiny but hot)... def a man writing about all the types of women he thinks guys want to have sex with. A Spice Girl lineup-something for everyone-but not really useful other than as sex objects or objects to be saved. The CONSTANT reiteration of what a ‘old fashioned guy’ and ‘nice guy’ he is it makes me shiver.
And the ‘strong woman’ character ends up being pathetic, useless, in need of saving also- but just blusters, bosses, comes to wrong conclusions and is generally awful-(but needs to be saved because she’s so stubborn she gets herself in danger)... exactly how a man would write a ‘strong woman’. /Eyeroll.

As a mystery novel, this book was engaging– the mystery presented was well-written and cleverly revealed. But the writing disappointed me. Character development is scant (at points it read like badly written fan fiction), and the author indulges in lengthy descriptions of each female character's body and facial features and constant commentary on their attractiveness. Practically no appearance of a woman in the novel came without an evaluation of her sex appeal. Each woman fits neatly into a male fantasy trope (the secretly vulnerable "tough girl," the coquettish vamp, the victimized good wife, etc.) and ultimately needs to be rescued by the male protagonist. (YES, all of the women need rescuing! And NO, a woman never rescues a man.) No amount of good mystery writing can redeem this book from that persistent ick factor.

Ich habe mir von den Dresden Files viel erhofft. Mir ist bewusst, dass die Bücher im Laufe der Serie besser werden sollen, aber ehrlich gesagt, war Storm Front eine so große Enttäuschung, dass mir jegliche Lust auf den Rest der Serie vergangen ist.
Die Charaktere - allen voran Harry Dresden selbst - sind unglaublich eindimensional und klichebehaftet. So ziemlich alles was Dresden sagt, denkt oder tut hat mich beim lesen schaudern lassen, da es so unnatürlich gewirkt hat. Die Erzählstimme hört sich gestellt und holprig an und ist überhaupt nicht authentisch, Dresden wirkt eher wie ein schlechter Laienschauspieler, nicht wie ein echter Mensch aus Fleisch, Blut und eigenen Gedanken.
Die Handlung hat mich leider auch nicht fesseln können, wobei ich zugeben muss, dass das auch an meinen Problemen mit dem Schreibstil und den Charakteren liegen könnte.

I have heard about this series for years from people whose opinion I respect. I recently watched the TV series and this was the impetus to read the books.

I can't warn people enough of how poor this book was. One to two sentence descriptions of male characters but often multiple paragraph descriptio s of female character detailing why Dresden would sleep with them. I am no prude but this got offensive real fast.

I couldn't get into this book. The characters did nothing for me and I just found it boring. Nothing interested me enough and I had to force myself to read farther.

I am always seeing books being compared the Dresden Files so I finally decided to see what all the fuss is about. I still dont know! I don't know how such a mediocre book got such high ratings. I just found it plain boring and I really did not care at all what happened.

If this is his best work I will not be reading the rest of this series or any more of Jim Butchers work. I am always looking out for a good series in this genre, but this definitely isn't one of them.

It's really poorly written, I gave it about 100 pages before I gave up. If you're into pulpy detective novels with magic tacked on, go for it, but I was not a fan.

As far as the physical book, quality is good for the price. It arrived as expected and I didn't notice any issues with the print or build quality.
