I am very late into this series. Mind you, I was quite young before it first came out, so I waited for a couple of years before I dived in. And you know what the long wait is well worth it.

I've heard a lot from famous people and the less famous that this book is great, but then again the skeptic in me brushed the reviews away as the publishing world's marketing strategies... until I read it my self.

It took me a lot longer to finally read the book than originally planned, because (1) I only preferred hardcover now-a-days, (2) the hardcover edition for this book had only a short limited run, and (3) the recent limited reprint only happened last year (2104). And that only made this experience even sweeter.

This kind of story satisfies my limitation as a reader. You see I have this condition (I was once hit in the head by a huge rock, leaving a huge impact on my memory retention and a huge scar on my head) that, without my wanting it, forces me to forget things right away. That is why I have to make this review a few seconds after I read the entire book and that the impressions are still fresh.

This fast paced book almost wanted to stick to my memory, but I am not counting on that... so I have to make this review fast. The story was great in a way that it incorporates magic in a realistic sense -- someone told me this is the core of realism. And I loved it. I don't have to picture a fantastical and out of this world setting and the contemporary world is well enough for it. I am not from Chicago, but hey at least I have a great reference.

Then comes in an almost human main character. Almost in a sense that he is just like any bloke around the corner, riddled with struggles and issues with paying the bills and stuff, only he has been brushed by a talent with magic. Paint in more commoners into the picture and we are almost seeing into a regular story of a man, a freelance for that matter, living a regular life. The basic course of human survival.

Why, what makes this character live a special life is the said special gift he had... Harry Dresden, for that is his name, is relatable at best. Because of the easy-to-read writing, I don't have to strain my self and reading the tale of magic, friction with women and stint on romance, fighting and befriending creatures of the other kind, and dealing with authorities and rule-breakers feel like the usual dealings of a normal life. How very good an author to make you feel like that while reading a dark magical tale all the while.

Jim Butcher is a new addition to my favorite authors. He is very good at what he is doing and I hope he gets better every time. Now I am planning to buy all of his books in hardcover, but the sad thing is only the first book got the reprint... Will there be a chance for this newcomer to fulfill his dreams of completing this series and his other works in hardcover, I am not certain but there is no loss in hoping, in dreaming...

For now, I will treasure this story in my head until it is eventually wiped out... what a great gift (if you look at the bright side) since reading a new book is an entirely new experience for me... More like meeting an old friend for a first time.

5,0 av 5 stjärnor Beloved first Dresden Files novel

I adore this book and the series. I have cross stitched sampler of the last sentence of the first chapter of Storm Front. Love the geeky references and clever dialog. But mostly I love Harry. He is always out gunned and knows it. He evolves throughout the series. But this first book, it sets the tone for the whole series.

Recenserad i USA 🇺🇸 den 9 april 2007

Whether it's his casual aloofness in the world of wizardry or his decided non-interest in conforming to every rule set forth for magical application, there's just something about Harry Dresden. Book one of the Dresden Files is at first a mild intro into the now famously popular series, but one that came around when least expected and beguiled this reader into sticking to the pages till every last word was absorbed. Maybe it's more that Harry's a good old-fashioned guy with a twist...yeah, and he's out to get whoever is targeting him.

As a wizard and occasional magical consultant for the Chicago P.D., Harry's used to seeing crimes that dabble in the bizarre. When his counterpart on the force, Karrin Murphy, brings him in for the latest and gruesome greatest, it's a disturbing use of black magic that has Harry stumped. Not one to leave humanity in the lurch, he takes on the case, in addition to a mysterious inquiry made by a suburban housewife. Detectives have nothing on Harry when he begins to delve into both cases, quickly coming to realize that the rest of the world might not want anything uncovered. From mob bosses to magical wardens meant to keep magic in line, Harry's got one heck of a time keeping himself afloat. When the black magic and his own White Council come gunning for him, he digs deeper and takes a stand. After all, the bills do have to get paid somehow.

Set in a gritty alternate reality where magic is on the outskirts of human existence, Storm Front introduces a witty and engrossing side to the urban fantasy genre. It's a first person tale told by one of the more interesting male leads to grace the pages of books. Caught between so many rock and hard places, Harry's constantly twisting and turning to figure his way out of the next tight spot. With limitations forced on him at every turn, one would think he'd fight more than a little dirty. He does, to a point, but remains steadfast to his beliefs too. Thanks to his mystical detecting skills, readers are treated to some very amusing and action steeped scenarios and the host of rich secondary characters always adds to them. The descriptions used for the magical encounters are believable and told in a reader friendly way, allowing readers to sink into the storyline that much easier. By book's end, you too might breath a little easier as I did, but find yourself wondering what's up next for Harry Dresden. Only way to find out is the snatch up the second installment, Fool Moon, then the third and forth and fifth...A truly wonderful discovery and one I would reread again and again.

5,0 av 5 stjärnor Review of Audio CD
Recenserad i USA 🇺🇸 den 3 juni 2012

This is book one in an ongoing series about Harry Dresden, a wizard detective in Chicago. Jim Butcher sets the standard for urban fantasy. His writing, characterization, plots and world-building are unparalleled. I have been a huge fan of his since early 2007 when my then high-school age son introduced me to this series.

This review is primarily about the unabridged audio CD. The sound quality is excellent and it is unabridged. It is narrated by actor James Marsters, best known for playing the character Spike, a platinum-blond, British vampire in the TV series
Buffy the Vampire Slayer  and its spin-off series  Angel , between 1997 and 2004. Marsters does an outstanding job on every part of the reading, making listening in that regard a real pleasure. If he had not been a good reader, it would have been hard for me to sit through the full book, so I am very grateful for his talents, because experiencing this novel as an audiobook gave me the opportunity to admire Jim Butcher's writing even more than I did before--which I did not think was possible. In my experience of listening to audio versions of books, very few of them can stand up to the intense focus of being read aloud, which is much slower than reading silently to oneself. This relative snail's pace acts to draw attention to every problem of dialogue, pacing and plot.

I am happy to report that under that intense spotlight, I experienced not a single flaw in this book.

I am not a person who often reads a book more than once--too much to read and far too little time. But this book was definitely worth experiencing twice. And owning this recording means I may listen to it far more times than that in the future.

This is one of the best purchases I ever made.

5,0 av 5 stjärnor I Haven't Stopped Buying This Book.

I have purchased this book three separate times to give to three separate people because it's too great not to share. Harry Dresden is, (in many ways) like an old private eye detective: Chivalrous (can't say no to a dame in distress), gentlemanly, and super-smart. He has the comedic timing and fourth-wall breaking commentary of Deadpool. And if that wasn't enough, he's ALSO a wizard. As the reader, you are like an old friend to Harry. While reading the book, it is as though he has written this all down knowing YOU would be the one to pick it up and read it. The book opens like a scene from an old private eye show. The old gumshoe reading a book in his office while a ceiling fan lazily rotates overhead. He gets a call from a woman saying she needs his help and he can't turn her down (something about the desperation and fear in her voice). Then it gets weird. In the most awesome, terrifying, haunting, edge-of-your-seat kind of way. The Chicago PD has a special department for cases that can't be wrapped up with a neat little bow, and they need Harry's help to solve one of the grizzliest murders it's seen in years. It looks to Harry, like it may have been committed by someone with very dark magic, and an even darker soul. And that's just the first few pages. Buckle up kids, this ride gets bumpy. It has everything: Comedy, sci-fi, action, adventure, fantasy, and a hell of a lot of fun. BE WARNED: Once you start this series, you will not be able to stop yourself from buying all the books and reading them. And at this moment (January 2015), the series is yet unfinished. So pace yourself, enjoy the story line and the many characters you will grow to love and appreciate. Enjoy!

The book is pure entertainment, nothing deep, and fast-paced. It's a quick read and great escapism. The book is both standalone and an introduction to the world of Harry Dresden. Other books in the series add to the world building and characters, once introduced, tend to pop up in future books as well. At the same time, each story is complete in itself. Fun, with no compulsion to read the next one. This is a series you leave and come back to when you're in the mood.
