5,0 av 5 stjärnor and is it really good vs. evil

***4.5 STARS***

PLOT
Are you a Renegade or a Anarchist? is it really as simple as choosing a side? and is it really good vs. evil? The city of Gatlon has been divided by those who admire the Renegades & those who detest them. Our MC Nova aka Nightmare is a Prodigy, someone born with superhuman abilities. Nova at a very young age was raised by her parents to trust in the Renegades to save the day however, too soon she learned this was not the case for her. When tragedy struck Nova at the age of 6, everything she believed in crumbled & the seed of resentment towards the Renegades began to grow deep within. Vowing vengeance, Nova takes to life underground with other Anarchists intent on the destruction of the Renegades. The overall consensus is that Renegades aren’t out on the streets saving lives, they are glorified super stars that the people have come to idolize through parades and intense media coverage. The Renegades themselves believe everything they do is in the best interest of society. However, not just anyone can become a Renegade, Prodigies interested in joining must go through what is known as the Renegade Trials. Based on your super human ability, Renegade teams can choose you to join their squad very much like the American tv show The Voice haha!

We follow Nova as she sets out to get back at those she believes have failed her and the city she lives in. I enjoyed seeing how Nova went about positioning herself to enact her plan however, I do believe plot pacing took a hit. Renegades is generous on the page count & although I LOVED every single one of the characters, there were some moments of no real activity. That being said, my enjoyment wasn’t too impacted & towards the end there are certain elements introduced that serve sort of as a jet-pack concluding with a strong and unsuspecting finish.

CHARACTERS

Although the story does focus mostly on Nova, we meet a slew of characters both Renegades and Anarchists alike. The finished copy actually has a small glossary in the front of the book. Nova was pretty much raised in a underground subway tunnel surrounded by a handful of other Anarchists. It’s made clear that the Anarchists ranks have taken a severe hit and not many are left. Nova spends her time with her adopted family of Anarchists Queen Bee (has a special connection to bees), Cyanide (King of poisons & natural gasses), Phobia (will draw the fear right out of you), The Detonator (BOOM!), and The Puppeteer (creepy as hell lol) who are all Prodigies with innnnneresting abilities. I REALLY liked all of the Anarchists which speaks to how well Meyer blurs the lines between who is good and who is evil.

The Renegades are more of a corporation expanding world wide with many arriving in Gatlon city to train. We meet Adrian Everheart at the start of the story while he is experimenting with his abilities (vague for fear of spoilers). Adrian is the adopted son of Captain Chromium & Dread Warden who are both leading political figures and part of the Council which governs over the Renegades in protecting Gatlon. I appreciated the LGBTQ representation with Adrian’s dads who although they are side characters, are still very important people in leading roles in fictional Gatlon city & that’s pretty damn awesome! Adrian is team leader of his squad & we are introduced to Red Assassin (Gem & Rubies manipulator), Monarch (special connection with butterflies), and Smokescreen (smoke manipulator who is also disabled). However, Adrian is the character we spend most our time with & I ended up loving him to pieces. Although we get some moderate page time with Adrian’s squad, I do wish they were as fleshed out as the Anarchists were.

WRITING & FINAL THOUGHTS

Any time I can get my hands on a Marissa Meyer story, I will! One of my all time favorite YA authors, I cannot resist her writing and the worlds she creates full of complex & morally gray characters. By the time you reach the end of Renegades, it will be hard for you to choose a side. Although the Renegades mean well, are they really helping or hurting the people of Gatlon city? & although the Anarchists claim to want independence for the people of Gatlon city, is full fledged freedom with no government really the answer? I myself haven’t chosen a side yet & love that about this story. Start to finish I enjoyed my time with these characters & found myself at times rooting for both sides lol. The plot could’ve been paced a bit better & I would like to see the other characters fleshed out a bit more, particularly on the Renegade side. Other than that, I CANNOT WAIT for the sequel!!! anyone who has already devoured this knows that with that ending, the suffering will be long & hard haha! MARISSA HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!!! <3 <3 <3

4,0 av 5 stjärnor A World You Will Want to Discover...no matter your superpower!

Heroism wasn’t about what you could do, it was about what you did.

I was in from the moment I read the description of Renegades. I have always had personal feelings about the lines drawn to distinguish between anarchists and the law/government. This is also the main moral battle throughout this book, the Anarchists took down the shitty government who were persecuting anyone who was a prodigy (having superpowers). So without the government to rule, gangs ended up taking over and ruining what the Anarchists wanted to achieve. They mostly just wanted the prodigies to not be killed, so once the offending government was gone, they expected people to rule themselves. Eventually, a group of prodigies came forward to try and take back the city from the gangs and they became the Renegades. Ultimately, the Anarchists were killed or shunned from society. The Renegades ruled now.

Nova is an Anarchist. She was born with her prodigal powers during the time of anarchy were the Renegades were just starting to clean up the streets from the villainous gangs but that didn’t help when her family was torn apart. For ten years she has been off grid and secretly a part of the Anarchists. She knows that not all the villains are bad and not all the heroes are all that wonderful. Nova has an unprecedented chance to become a double agent and infiltrate the Renegades.

Adrian was born to an original Renegade, and when his mother was murdered, he was adopted by the two leaders. Adrian is conflicted over the Renegades purposes these days. The Council spends more time governing than fighting to take back the streets. He can see the good in what the Renegades do, but he also thinks some things have become too bureaucratic. He feels like he should be doing more to fight crime, and he may just step around the rules that are supposed to guide him.

Both Nova and Adrian also suffer the fact that their abilities aren’t seen as all that superhero quality and that also helps shape the people they have become, now that society lifts up the gifted instead of murdering them. It can be easy to see that not everything works out in each characters lives. Nothing is black and white, no superhero organization can save everyone. Ultimate power can corrupt the most honest of peoples intentions. There is no answer as to who has the right ideas on governing. Even people within each group have contrary ideals at times.

Nova and Adrian on similar yet colliding paths. I could see where the plot was going and I was cheering it on the whole time. You will be rooting for them both and tuning in for that romantic tension! This is definitely a character-driven book, and each and every character has a purpose and I was there for it. Plus it was diverse without feeling forced and I especially loved seeing how not only a disabled superhero still has the power to kick ass, but that some superpowers are seen as less than other types and how this could be extrapolated into any part of societal woes.

This book is filled with imagery and depth. It played out like a movie on the pages. The book was almost too descriptive at times, where I would get caught up in the details instead of the story. The cast of characters are well described and have their own voices. I loved the fight scenes, even with the stereotypical superhero dialogue! I was laughing and turning the pages. My only issue with the book was it’s length, I think it may have been too long and I could see potential for a more concise story. I know that this series was intended to be a trilogy, so I think I understand the length now that it is releasing as a duology, so I have faith in the next book to come!

I think this is a well-crafted superhero story where you will question your morals and decide for yourself where you stand. What is good and what is evil? Renegades deftly rides both lines of the story, are you a Renegade or are you an Anarchist? And the way Marissa writes this story, there is no right answer! Renegades is a story for all, no matter your politics or your superpower!

5,0 av 5 stjärnor A fast paced, highly addicting, adrenaline rush of a read

An action packed, riveting read. RENEGADES is not your classic super heroes vs villains story. In true Marissa Meyer fashion, she delivers a thrilling read that will make you question who the real villains are and what makes a real super hero. She blurs the lines flawlessly between villains and superheroes, making it hard to choose between the two. This is no cookie cutter super heroes vs villains story. It's a fantastic, highly addicting story that will leave you wanting more!

Told from both Nova and Adrian's points of views really added depth and a much needed different perspective for this story. It was incredibly easy to tell when the point of views in the story telling changed. Honestly, I don't think this story would have been as good if it had been told any other way. The dual story telling not only allows readers to get to know both characters better, you get to see more of societies within both the Renegades side, and the Anarchists. It's fascinating to see how they're both governed, and who makes up the heroes and villains in this story.

Nova and Adrian were incredibly easy for me to like. I felt like I understood both of them. From the choices they made, to Nova's want for vengeance, and Adrian's want for justice. The more I got to know them, the more I realized they're not that different. They both have a lot at stake though. I understood their reasons for being on the opposites of the law. It wasn't hard for me love these two characters despite all they have working against them. I definitely felt like their story is a mix of Romeo & Juliet, meets your favorite superheroes story, meets something entirely knew, and given the perfect Marissa Meyer twist.

The characters in Renegades are AWESOME! They were more than just villains and super heroes. They are characters who became larger than their own stories. It was incredibly easy to understand their motives, their choices, their feelings, and understand who they were, and who they became by the end of the story. I absolutely loved getting to know each of the characters in this book. Though in true Marissa Meyer fashion, there's so much more to come with these characters. I have a feeling there's a lot more shocking secrets and twists that will be revealed as this series continues.

The setting is awesome! I absolutely loved the Renegade world, because it's complex. It's a world that is full of conflict, fighting, danger, and yet full of hope. It's a world that makes you question a lot of things that happen. Similar to it's plot line, is complicated, twisted, and full of surprises. Trust me, this world is a character all it's own, and adds so much to this story. I loved the action, the electrifying character chemistry, and the unlikely friendships at the heart of this story.

This book full of incredible characters, shocking twists, fantastic world building, and includes entertaining story telling. One of my favorite reads of this year, RENEGADES is a fast paced, highly addicting, adrenaline rush of a read. Don't let the page count fool you. With all that happens in this story, you'll find you won't be able to put this book down once you start reading.

Ok I’ll admit I’ve been putting this book off for over a year now, even though I insisted on pre-ordering it and having it the very day it was released. I think part of it was that I didn’t want to rush through the series - I had binged the Lunar Chronicles and then missed the world immensely. Another part of me was truly afraid I would not love it or the characters as much as the Rampiant gang. But in an effort to read everything on my unread bookshelves, I jumped in (admittedly through the audiobook).

My first impressions:
I am such a sucker for book that start with a bang, and the one certainly did. I immediately wanted to know more about the prodigies - how did one choose between a Renegade or an Anarchist? How did you get the abilities? And what we’re all the possible superpowers out there in this word? The way things were unfolded and connected to Nova’s personal story was informative and fast paced at the same time. I knew this book was going to have a lot of the troupe’s I loved and knew Marissa Meyer did so well; enemies to lovers, grey characters, a blurred line between the “good” and “bad” guys and lots of secrets.

The plot:
This was a fun story and I never really got bored or wanted it to move faster. The premise of Nova infiltrating the Renegades (another troupe I LOVE) had me on my toes waiting for something disastrous to happen. And I love that Marissa Meyer built in a lot of near misses because it would be too unbelievable if she got away with it since so many people knew her face. There are also a lot of angsty moments with Nova and Adrian both internally fretting about their double identities because revealed which teetered on being tedious, but never quite made it there. SO MUCH deceit and treachery and that’s really what kept it interesting (other than the obvious pull of superpowers).

THE ENDING. Seriously she just blew up a huge factor of the plot, BAM with the last few sentences! Now of course I’m dying to run home and grab Archenemies

Characters:
I loved goody-two-shoes, cinnamon roll Adrian - he has quite the past and I just wanted him to succeed and prove himself. What a creative power and I loved seeing all the ways he used it.

Nova is a great character (even if she is sarcastic and grumpy most of the time). Her backstory is a little vague and I think we will learn more of it (hopefully) in the next one.

I have to say some of the other characters fell a little flat or not quite developed enough. A lot of the Renegades are pretty vague also and I really want to figure out more about them. This story really was mostly about Nova and Adrian (and can I say I just don’t think I really ship them together?)

Max is absolutely my favorite character and by far the most interesting one!

Ms. Meyer simply has my number-- she knows exactly what I enjoy to read. It's been almost 3 years since this book came out, which I PREORDERED a copy of and didn't read it for again, 3 years! I even reached a point where I thought maybe I'll just give up on this series-- I've definitely read other Superhero stories and they don't really stand out much. I don't think the actual superhero part of this book stands out much either, though some of the powers are kinda cool. We follow Nova (or Nightmare) who is more of the Super Villain of the story. She is part of a group known as "The Anarchists" who want to take down "The Renegades", or the heroes of this world. After some sort of apocalyptic event that led to an Age of Anarchy with super villain gangs did whatever they want with no governmental control. This Age of Anarchy ended with the Day of Triumph, where a group of superheroes, the now Renegades, put an end to the gangs and established The Council. The Renegade Council now oversees the city and protects the city from crime. Nova's Uncle, the Lead Anarchist, was killed during the Day of Triumph, but she still works with other Anarchists to take down the Renegades. The Anarchists believe that the Renegades form of control is wrong and fight for freedom for all. Nova and her crew come up with a plan for her to compete in the Renegade trials in order to join the Renegades and gather information for the Anarchists to take them down from within.

It's not the most super original plot or anything, but the thing that Ms. Meyer always gets me with is her adorable romances. Nova of course ends up meeting a cute Renegade Boy, Sketch, and you get to follow not really a hate-to-love sorta thing, but just a fundamental "you're the bad guy, I can't like you" romance story. I don't know how she gets me to fangirl for these things but she does. The foundation of it is laid within the plot, and she just pulls through with it while pulling me in. I know I just said the plot isn't original, but it's not bad, either. It can be fun to have a simpler plot from time to time.

I'd say if you like her other books, you'll enjoy this one as well. I'm disappointed that I slept on this series for as long as I did, but now I do get to binge read all of them.

Content warning; murder

Rep: queerness, slow burn, found family

Thoughts
Neutral thoughts:

I had fun with this. I followed along with the audiobook & it really made the story go by. I wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator for Adrian--I thought that he sounded too old for the character of Adrian & too robotic. But as the book went on, I was able to push thru my dislike for his voice portrayal & enjoy the story that Marissa Meyer was creating for us.

I thought the powers were interesting & how someone gained their superpower was unique (even though how they were obtained was, for the most part, really sad). This was very action heavy, and while that sometimes doesn't bother me, there was A LOT of that in this & I found myself just absently listening to those parts. There were some parts that I found cheesy & there were some tidbits of information/things that I saw happening or being found out, but it was the way that they were revealed that I really liked & I'm gonna start book ASAP.

We do the see the start of a slow burn romance blossom between Adrian & Nova in this & I'm curious to see how its going to play out given Nova's real identity & Adrian being an actual Renegade. I already feel the angst!!

I actually won this ARC in an AWESOME contest that Marissa Meyer held about a month ago. There aren’t even words to describe how thrilled I was, not only to create a super villain that I really connected with, but to get the chance to read one of my most anticipated reads of 2017 in advance. For those of you who saw my contest entry, but haven’t heard the news, I wanted to share: for nanowrimo I’m actually writing my super villain’s story! If you want to learn more about it feel free to message me on Instagram (@asthebookends) or email me!

Now, on to my review. Renegades actually managed to surprise me in some of the best ways. I certainly didn’t expect the world Marissa Meyer built to be borderline Dystopian, I didn’t expect to love BOTH sides so much, and I certainly didn’t expect to be left craving the next book so badly! The main characters were both lovable, and I found myself having a hard time choosing a side. When two characters you adore are on opposite sides of a war, how do you choose between them?

I was honestly a little worried that the characters would have relatively predictable powers. You know the ones I’m talking about: invisibility, super strength, flying, etc. While there were a few characters like that, for the most part each character had an incredibly unique ability. I perhaps enjoyed Adrian’s power the most. As Sketch he had the ability to draw anything and pull it into reality. How stinking cool is that?

I will forewarn my fellow romance addicts – there wasn’t as much romance in this novel as I generally like. The main characters definitely have something going on, but it doesn’t really turn into anything just yet. Given the cliff hanger ending, I’m eager to see how their romance progresses.

I did, unfortunately have to give Renegades 4 stars instead of 5. While I enjoyed the characters and the world building, I found the book far too easy to put down. It actually took me almost a week to get through (practically an eternity for me) because every time I picked it up I only got through a couple of chapters. I honestly felt as though this book was the set up for an INCREDIBLE sequel, one that I absolutely can’t wait to pick up.

My Takeaway: Renegades was an intriguing read with an incredible premise, but I found it easier put down than I’d like to admit. I felt as though this first book was a build up to an amazing sequel – one I will absolutely be picking up the minute it comes out next year.

«One cannot be brave who has no fear.»

The world is filled with people who have powers, some of them are Anarchists, some are Renegades, but both groups have good and bad members. Nothing is what it seems.
Renegades has been such a good and original read. Give me an antihero with a good tragic backstory and I am sold! I especially liked the very diverse cast: there's a hero with a disability who walks with a cane, Nova (the main charecter) is Filipina/Italian, others are described as having brown skin, and Adrian (another main charecter) is the adopted child of a gay couple who also happen to be the leaders of the Renegades.
I loved the originality of their powers and how some of the prodigies came to have them. Also, the love story! The romance is actually one of the least important parts in the story but the way Meyer describes how their feelings evolve you can't help but root for the charecters. Which brings me to my girl Nova, she is very resourceful, confident, and intelligent. The whole book is from her perspective.
Finally, there are a lot of clichés in the story, "Your days of villainy are over, Nightmare." , which I'm usually not a fan of but this time I enjoyed it in a "it's so bad that it's good" kind of way. The book is a bit slow at times but it's an easy and interesting read.
