Read Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth before World Without End, to understand about building the
Kingsbridge Cathedral which plays a central roll in both books and TV series.
In Pillars, Ken explains how the "rod" [as of unit of measure like foot and meter]
was used to layout the cathedral floor.
The Pillars mini-series TV show is very well made with high production standards.
TV series follows the book as close as any TV series or movie follows a book.
I suggest reading at least the first 100 pages of Pillars before watching the Pillars TV series.

Now for World Without End, Ken's book is again outstanding and an excellent follow-up to Pillars after 200 years.
But the World Without End TV series was made by another TV production company and does not closely follow the book.
Read World without End completely before watching the World without End TV series.
The first seven TV show segments somewhat follows the book with the same characters.
Segment eight does not in anyway follow the book.
BUT before playing any part of World Without End TV mini-series, watch the "how it was made" segment on disk two. In this segment, Ken explains why the screenplay departs from his book and he approves of the screenplay.

Die Audioqualität - selbst mit einem sehr guten Surround system von Bose - ist diese alles andere als gut. Ab hoher Lautstärke ging es einigermaßen.
Die dargestellte Geschichte schweift vom Buch sehr stark ab, was sehr enttäuschend ist.

I have to agree with most of the negative reviews already posted. If you have read the book and in any way engaged with the personalites and feelings of the characters watching this series will be a great disappointment. Although I understand that some leeway has to be given to enable the scope of the book to be condensed for TV, almost the entire story-line has been "butchered" for the sake of cheap melodrama, partly perhaps because each episode needed to end with some kind of dramatic climax. I watched the first 2 episodes with expectation , the next 2 with hope, the 5th and 6th with an amount of depression and by the time we had got to the farcical events of the final part I was fast forwarding in the hope that at least Caris and Merthin would be given some kind of rewarding ending in keeping with the book. Sadly, even this was to be denied the viewer. It gains an extra star due to what I thought were a gew decent performances.
On the other hand, if you haven't read the book you might enjoy it ( if you can really accept the ridiculous fiction at the end) but I would simply say - read the book!

I bought this in the hope it would be as good as "Pillars of the Earth", but in my opinion it is vastly inferior.
This lacks all of the subtlety and the sense of intrigue within the novel. The story is rushed through at such speed that no opportunities are provided for any sense of anticipation or empathy towards any of the characters to develop. I suspect the portrayal of the villains would be better suited to pantomime.
In spite of some good acting and a decent plot, I feel the filming of this story was very badly let down by poor direction and scriptwriting.

Le premier volet des " piliers de la Terre" était un vrai petit joyau televisuelle : Bon casting , scenario evolutif et brillamment tiré du roman , excellence des decors et de la musique ...MAIS...Que nenni amie Benoit , nous ne sommes point ici pour s'esbaudir - à juste titre - du premier volet mais du second et là ...Grosse deception pour tous ceux qui se sont rués sur cette suite qui s'annonçait plus qu'allèchante :
On n'a fait que recopier - et très mal - le premier opus ! Godwin ( acteur excècrable ou scenario grotesque ? ) = Waleran ss la finesse et l'intelligence du second. Martin- Caris ( acteurs insipides) = Jack et Aliena sans le charisme des seconds. Petronille = la mère de William ....On continue ?
L'histoire s'achève de facon rocambolesque pour ne pas dire ridicule
On s'ennuie...Tout est déjà vu..
Au final , abstenons nous

Ich habe zuvor das Buch "Die Tore der Welt" gelesen gehabt und muss leider sagen, es sind für meinen Geschmack einfach ZU VIELE Abweichungen. Das Ende und der Anfang haben mit der Story im Buch eigentlich nichts mehr zu tun. In der Mitte gibt es einige Übereinstimmungen, natürlich nur soweit es die Gegebenheiten am Anfang zu lassen.
Es wurden einige Personen völlig ausgelassen, die meiner Meinung nach zentral für die ursprüngliche Handlung waren, so wie beispielsweise Gwendas Bruder Philomen. Auch finde ich im Film die Rolle des Königs und der Königin zu sehr fokussiert, da diese im Buch auch bestenfalls indirekt erwähnt werden. Meines Erachtens nach hätte man da den Fokus anders setzen müssen.

Wenn man es schafft sich von der ursprünglichen Geschichte des Buches zu lösen ist der Film aber nicht umbedingt schlecht. Wer das Buch also nicht gelesen hat, kann an dem Film sicher durchaus sein Spaß haben.

Not even close, IMO. Quite a disappointment due to the writing, acting and a story line that seems to jump around needlessly. I found it to be lacking all the high points of Pillars. This one has too much of a focus on violence toward women. It included scenes that seem to be pointless except to show how ridiculously perverted a character can be or to show yet another body part. Would not buy this one again.

I read the book, and the video decided that it was best to cut important characters right out of the script. They also changed the story line so much since they cut characters that very important things didn't even take place. This was an awful rendition and the only saving grace was that there are some good actors in it.

Ok, I'm a prude, but this DVD was a total disappointment. Why? There is much too much graphic sex & violence. It could have been very entertaining without the smut. Other reviewers gave it such high ratings I was most anxious to view it. But, like most books, movies, etc., now days, it is filled with unneeded garbage which leaves me sad.
