Trying to judge a science fiction puppet show made with children’s audiences of 1962 in mind from the perspective of an adult in 2020 is almost an exercise in futility. Nonetheless I shall try.

First let’s get the obvious stuff out the way. Yes, it’s in black and white. Yes, you can see the puppet strings. Yes, when compared to later Anderson series such as the much-loved ‘Thunderbirds’, the effects and puppets are much more limited. Yes, the plots are a lot more tailored to children’s audiences. Yes, the characterisations are very much a product of the era it was made in (the same is true for a lot of Anderson series).

But if you can get past that, then what you’re left with is a pioneering work of British television. Whilst you can see the strings in one or two places, the model effects are miles ahead of anything being made at the time- compare it to early episodes of the BBC’s ‘Doctor Who’ for example. The black and white actually suits many of the stories as it adds a level of ‘scariness’ to the stories that they otherwise wouldn’t have- whilst Gerry Anderson would make more sophisticated shows than this, I would argue he wouldn’t make one that was as outright scary until ‘Captain Scarlet’.

Barry Gray’s music is, as always, first rate. The voice acting blends in nicely. At 39 episodes over 6 discs there’s plenty to see. There’s a really good booklet included which contains all the information about ‘Fireball XL5’ you would ever want to know. The episodes themselves are crystal clear, sometimes to the show’s detriment- those puppet strings again!

If you’re new to Gerry Anderson, then I’d honestly start with ‘Thunderbirds’ first and then come back to ‘Fireball’. If you’ve seen and liked ‘Thunderbirds’ and want to see how he developed up to that point, then it’s as good a place as any to jump on board. If you were a fan of the show growing up, then you’ll find your favourite episodes lovingly restored for your viewing pleasure.

Gerry Anderson's "Lost" Gem

When people think of Gerry Anderson's "Supermarionation" series from the 1960's, they think first of "Thunderbirds", then "Captain Scarlet", "Stingray", or even the first Supermarionation series, "Supercar".

Few think of "Fireball XL5", even though it was the only Supermarionation series to be broadcast in the United States over a network (Saturday mornings on NBC from October, 1963 until September, 1965). Here in the 'States, all of the other Supermarionation shows were syndicated to individual television stations.

Perhaps because it was in black-and-white, "XL5"'s hasn't been widely seen in reruns. And that's a shame. This is, in some respects, the most entertaining of the Supermarionation series.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for my younger brother, who was four-and-a-half when this series premiered on NBC (in fact, it's one of the first TV shows he recalls watching when it was first on the air). He loved it then, and he loves it now.

Granted, Dr. Venus occassionally got sexist treatment from the other characters (she was a Doctor of Space Medicine, but still had to fix dinner), principal villians Mr. and Mrs. Space Spy had Russian accents (this was the Cold War era, remember?), and the characters used "oxygen pills" instead of doning spacesuits and helmets for spacewalks (likely because it was too much of a bother to design space helmets with holes on the top for the various puppetry strings and Supermarionation wires to go through). But overall, this is a quite entertaining series.

One of the best things about "XL5" were the visual effects of XL5 and other spaceships taking off, in flight, and landing. These were quite elaborate for early 1960's television, and were done by Derek Meddings, who continued with Anderson through "UFO" and went on to do special effects for many classic movies of the 1970's, 1980's, and early 1990's. Had "XL5" been produced in America, the show might well have won an Emmy for best visual effects had there been an Emmy award in that category then.

Anyone who is a fan of the classic Gerry Anderson Supermarionation shows but who has never seen "XL5" should go out and buy this DVD set. You'll be happy you did!

By the way, the 4-star review is mine. My brother would rate "XL5" six stars on a scale of one star to five stars!

If you ever saw this show, as I did, when it was first released for the TV in black and white, you might have thought you would never see it again. It comes from that time-warp of my impressionable youth. It was broadcast in Australia a few years after release in the UK, and in time for the USA and USSR space race of the mid 60's. We had Century21 comic books and hardcover annuals to follow up.

The clarity is high in DVD format. Plenty of quaint puppet strings are visible, but the characters, dialog and stories are all I remembered. My kids started watching with me, and asked to see another episode. We will slowing go through all 39 of them. I heard one voice over episode by David Graham and it made me laugh.

If you ever remember seeing and enjoying an episode of this in your youth, you will probably enjoy this DVD set all over again. Certainly better than I remembered Captain Scarlet or Supercar, which now seem flat and bland by comparison. This is on a par with Thunderbirds.

Nostalgic reminder of simpler tv days. Good been kept in original Black & White format. Worth the money & a watch if you remember the original tv series. Not really for today’s youngsters.

Somehow when I was ten years old this was a fabulous adventure. Steve and Venus racing to board the Fireball, a dramatic lift off, the race to save the(pick it) world, solar system, universe, galaxy, etc. from the evil............(always Eastern European accents with a monobrow) bad guys. But our guys won because they have pure hearts and good intentions.........

It works four or five or ten times........and then gets boring(which surprised me, I love this sort of space opera). The quality of the B&W video is excellent and the sound quality is good considering that these were done in the early 1960s on a (literally) shoestring budget.

I bought this TV show from my childhood to amuse my grandchildren, and it has been a great success. We enjoy watching episodes together. My grandsons find it interesting that it is in black and white, and have a lot of fun spotting the strings.
Of course, the appearance, attitudes and themes of the episodes are products of their time, and are now very dated. That does not stop me enjoying the nostalgia, or stop my grandchildren sharing the fun with me. The boys are also amazed by their grandmothers singing the closing theme as a duet!

Any Gerry Anderson fans will not have a complete set if this is not included. Although you can see the primitive methods, for its day it was very clever and cutting edge! Introduce your 4 year olds to Gerry Anderson to this, and move up the scale with the others.

It certainly has its shortfalls in comparison to modern day special effects and puppetry but it quite genuinely brings back a warmth to the soul that only a cherished memory can do.

Great to have the hole collection together in one place and the work done to up grade the recording was well worth it.
